Time for a new mix courtesy of the good DJs at Caliber! This one was recorded by head honcho Nate Seider as more of an "Intro to House Music 101" type of offering and exemplifies our love of all things Classic! We get a lot of requests from clients and guests alike for EDM, House, Techno and all sorts of other styles at the events we play. However many times we realize that their idea of House music may differ just a bit from *our* idea of House music. So here you go, a little House Music crash course!
Chicago in the 80's and 90's was an amazing incubator and testing ground for the records, DJs, producers, label owners and clubbers that defined the term House. Originally used to describe the type of music they were hearing at Frankie Knuckle's Warehouse (a dry club located on the 600 block of Jefferson st.), this beat morphed almost overnight into an international movement that is stronger than ever. Chicago is also a city of the Full Time DJ, home to hundreds of open-format DJs who make their living strictly off of entertaining. For this reason it's become known internationally as a hot spot for some of the world's best DJs, and a great training ground for wedding DJs we might add. Are you looking for a wine country wedding DJ with city-slicker skills? Do you want a Bay Area wedding DJ who can kick it with the most discerning of clientele? Are you looking for a Queer wedding DJ who actually understands and honors the Queer roots of today's culture? Are you interested in having a vinyl wedding DJ that knows their history and can deliver? Or are you just in the market for a non-cheesy wedding DJ who can give you and your guests the time of their lives? Well look no further, you've found it!

The 70's and 90's were seminal periods for both of these movements respectively, and these 19 tracks are just a tiny smattering of the great music that has come out of both eras. If you're looking for a San Francisco Wedding DJ that knows their history just as much as the hits, or if you want to hear something out of the ordinary at your event look no further. One of the funnest aspects of this business has been the process of discovering the best and brightest DJs that the Bay Area has to offer and to support those who have been trailblazers for the Bay Area's various communities over the years. Enter DJ Olga T. A 20+ year veteran of the Bay Area Queer/Women's Dance scene, she has supplied the soundtrack for hundreds of weekend afternoon soirées and LGBTQ+ events and is an absolute powerhouse behind the decks. Her ability to blend literally anything and everything has led her to have an incredibly full schedule at clubs and events from Sacramento and San Jose, but as we know it takes a very special type of professional to be able to handle the stress and demands of something as important as your wedding day. In this Olga excels, having an amazing amount of experience with private events and weddings for the last number of years. There is not a single situation that she isn't capable of handling and we have never been to a party that she hasn't absolutely crushed while on the decks. If you happen to be looking specifically for a Queer wedding DJ, or if you're just looking for an experienced local DJ who has been rocking the Bay for years, look no further!! Incredibly reliable, personable and just perfect in every way for our roster, we couldn't be happier to have Olga T on the team.
Come see us in our natural habitats!

Right around the Spring of 2005, a good friend and incredibly talented open-format DJ based in Chicago by the name of Spencer Lokken noticed a growing trend amongst his friends- they were asking him to please, PLEASE DJ their wedding. All of the companies they had interviewed featured cheesy button-pushers, completely uninterested in playing anything more than the old standby’s and tired anthems. They came complete with all of the bells and whistles, yet when it came time to the meat and bones of the reception they always seemed to fall flat, leaving an uninspired dance floor to hobble along until last call. Living in Chicago- birthplace of House Music, training ground for the world’s best and brightest- he knew the wedding DJ bar was set much lower than most of our particular demographic was used to. So he got serious.
Our big-sister company, Style Matters DJs got its start in the Summer of 2006, doing a small handful of weddings that year. Our concept was very simple- take our knowledge and expertise in the club realm, and apply it to special events and wedding receptions. The response was swift and overwhelmingly positive. People who had never heard the terms Backspin, Beatmatch or Hot Mix were marveling at the DJs ability to keep the music going so fluidly. Guests were pleasantly surprised at the inclusion of artists such as Radiohead, Bjork, Charles Mingus and Thievery Corporation during cocktails and dinner. They couldn’t believe they had just made it through a wedding without hearing YMCA or Love Shack. And so our company grew, employing more and more DJs as the years go by.
Currently Style Matters Chicago employs almost 30 DJs and is capable of handling up to 20 events per night on the busiest weekends. They have also opened their first full-service venue, Ovation, which is located in the near west side of Chicago and features (among other things) a state-of-the-art Void sound system, video wall, color photo booth, Steinway grand piano, full catering kitchen, green rooms for the wedding party and a restored 1959 Rolls Royce chauffeur service for the happy couple. Although we doubt we’ll reach those lofty heights any time soon, we hope to expand much in the same way over the next few years and are incredibly lucky to have such a great blueprint for success at our fingertips. We’ve tweaked that framework just a little bit to create our own version of the perfect unique boutique wedding DJ company- one that can handle every aspect from prelude to last call and create one of the most memorable and sweat-filled dancefloors you and your guests have ever seen.
So what ARE the needs of today’s modern couple when it comes to selecting a great DJ? Well, here is a list of things we’ve taken into account based on our observations. These are the cornerstones of our business.
We here at Caliber are dedicated to helping you find the best vendors for YOU. Don’t hesitate to send us a note if you have any questions about what to look for in DJs or other wedding professionals!!
Over the last few years we’ve had the opportunity to work at dozens of incredibly lovely venues. But there are a few that really stick out in our mind as spaces that go above and beyond to accommodate guests while providing a stunning backdrop for which to celebrate your most special of days. Here’s a short list of places we’ve been to that set the standard for sophisticated, unique and downright impressive ceremony and reception spots. These recommended venues are all capable of accommodating your ceremony, cocktails, dinner and dancing on site.
The SHED, Healdsburg CA ( www.healdsburgshed.com ) – a 2014 James Beard Award winner for Restaurant Design, this stunning 2-story space in the heart of Healdsburg has many faces- specialty cookware supply store, café, organic market, local wine purveyor. Their ethos is simple- source the best possible ingredients from local farms and create an unforgettable dining experience for all who enter. But it’s the 2,700 square foot open-air 2nd floor Grange, capable of seating 125 and complete with a side wall projection screen & A/V inputs that seals the deal for us. The massive sliding wooden wall on one side retreats to reveal a state of the art kitchen that is more than capable of wowing your guests with its presentation and culinary output. Recently the venue has paired with the renowned Paul Mahder Gallery (just a short walk away) to offer all-in-one ceremony and reception packages.
Paradise Ridge Winery, Santa Rosa CA ( www.prwinery.com ) – Nestled in the hills of Santa Rosa, we first stumbled upon Paradise Ridge in the fall of 2014 and it has since been not only one of our favorite venues to work at, but it also produces some of our favorite wines with their Sauvignon Blanc and Rockpile “Posse” Blend leading a very strong pack. This venue not only has the advantage of offering multiple areas in which to entertain your guests (including a fantastic ceremony space for about a hundred), but also some ridiculously beautiful scenery compliments of the surrounding area and grounds themselves. It is storied that the original founder of the winery, Marijke Byck-Hoenselaars, promised his love he would build a sculpture garden upon arrival on this site. And build it he did, enlisting multiple artists (including the famous Burning Man Temple designer David Best) to contribute pieces which dot the entire property. This contributes to an absolutely beautiful, classy-yet-whimsical setting.
Brazilian Room at Tilden Park, Berkeley CA (http://www.ebparks.org/activities/corpfamily/br ) - This venue is a favorite of ours for a few reasons- the gorgeous backdrop for a wedding ceremony, the easy accessibility for guests (no stairs to deal with!), the comfy coziness of the rustic, almost log-cabin-like main dining and reception hall (complete with fireplace). It’s also pretty easy on the wallet as well, being one of the more affordable venues for the couple on a tighter budget. Just make sure you lock the address into your GPS before heading to the venue, as its somewhat-remote location lends itself to lack of cell reception at times. Luckily, there is free WIFI for those of you who feel the need to live-Tweet the day.
The Thomas Fogarty Winery, Woodside CA (http://www.fogartywinery.com/ ) – The Santa Cruz Mountains are home to this iconic winemaker which specializes primarily in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their venue, capable of handling up to 216 guests, is one of the more impressive venues we’ve seen in wine country and offers state of the art accommodation against the backdrop of their beautiful Damiana Chardonnay Vineyard. Hilltop placement makes for a stunning ceremony space with near-360 degree views and their 4,000 square foot hillside pavilion and corresponding “Hill House” indoor cocktail lounge/dance floor create a warm and inviting atmosphere for all.
SSS Ranch, Calistoga CA (http://www.triplesranchnapa.com/ ) A very new addition to the Napa Valley venue list, this space is actually SO new that they were still completing construction on a significant portion of the property when we visited in late February! But what we saw was enough to leave us not only drooling over the property, but having our own fantasies of weekend-long family reunions and friendly get-togethers. What makes this place so amazing? For starters, it sleeps 30. That’s right, 30. Between the quaintest bungalows we’ve ever seen to the historic grand Victorians you’ll have more than enough room to spread out. It has a large in-ground pool and infinity hot-tub. The ceremony space, a lovely old tree which serves as the matriarch of the property, has a dedicated power line running out to it making amplification a piece of cake. And the owners have gone to great lengths to maintain the old world charm of the entire property through painstaking restoration and maintenance. This place is still relatively under-the-radar so make sure to inquire before word starts getting out!
